Poker Alternative #1 - Pot Limit Omaha Poker

Omaha Poker looks similar to Texas Holdem on the surface, with community cards and the same betting sequence. However, in this game each player is dealt 4 ‘hole cards' and must use exactly 2 from their hand and 3 from the board to make a hand at showdown. This changes the strategy significantly - with some very strong hands completed by the time the betting is over. Omaha is usually played with a ‘Pot Limit' betting structure, which means the maximum bet is the size of the current pot.

The high-low split version of Omaha is played in a similar manner to the Pot Limit Omaha as covered above. However, at showdown the pot is divided between the player with the best poker hand and the player with the ‘low' hand, which comprises the lowest 5 unique cards 8 or under. Players of this game are trying to ‘scoop' the pot by making the high and low at the same time - for example with a flush and a low card hand. In the Stud poker variations each player has their own cards rather than working with the shared community cards of Texas Holdem. Stud is usually played with a fixed limit betting structure, though can also be played pot-limit. There are 5 betting rounds in this game (compared to 4 in Holdem) which results in some large pots.
